Midsummer Night

Tonight we had a midsummers night picnic in the Park with Maya’s Waldorf Playgroup to celebrate Summer Solstice. The poetic, romantic, mythical night of the year when fairies might be seen along with other mythical creatures. The celebration of Midsummer’s night or eve was from ancient times linked to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and the shortest night. Traditionally bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southwards again. We did not have any bonfires at tonights picnic, but when we came home, we lit candles and lay in our mosquito net, while the sun set. We read a little from The Wind In The Willows and kept our eyes out for fairys…..we did not find any fairys, but we were delighted to watch fire flies flitting around our garden….Happy Summer to you all!
