This was our first time going to the Liberty Farms Sunflower Maze. Located in Sussex County, Northern New Jersey – day trip distance from NYC. I adore sunflowers and just happened to stumble across this gem while looking up local sunflower growers. As it turns out with over 1.5 million flowers it is the largest Sunflower Maze on the East Coast! They have been planting sunflowers for over 6 years and created the first sunflower maze in NJ. While the maze seems more like a wandering path in person, if you see and aerial view it is in fact a brilliant maze. The children loved running along the paths between the smiling sunflower faces. It is seriously picturesque so make sure you take a camera. The girls ran through the whole maze in  30 -45 minutes, stopping along the way to chase moths and collect grasshoppers and locust. At the entrance are suggested thematic games to play on the journey, as well as a clipboard of insects and animals to spot. It is a great educational field trip, as well as being incredibly beautiful.

We were curious what happened with the sunflowers when they were finished blooming and when we asked the lady at the entrance we were told that the reason behind growing sunflowers is to supply the American Audubon Society with sunflowers seeds. I love that growing the sunflowers is both practical and entertaining. Such an awesome idea!

Sunflower bloom dates depending on the weather and fall generally within the month of August. Check their website  before going and like their facebook page to receive reminders and updates.
